WHO WE ARE

In Nyanja, “Ulemu” means “respect.”

Ulemu is a Zambian non-profit organization committed to protecting vulnerable women and children from violence, abuse, discrimination, neglect, and social exclusion. Operating primarily in Lusaka’s most vulnerable communities, particularly Kanyama compound, Ulemu works to promote protection, dignity, justice, and inclusion for individuals exposed to gender-based violence and severe vulnerability.

Since 2019, Ulemu has managed the One Stop Center in collaboration with Kanyama General Hospital in Lusaka. The One Stop Center provides integrated and multidisciplinary services for survivors of violence, offering immediate and long-term support in a safe and coordinated environment. Services include medical care, psychological support, trauma counselling, legal assistance, child protection interventions, support during police reporting procedures, and rehabilitation pathways for survivors of abuse.

Our organization is composed of a multidisciplinary team including counsellors, psychotherapists, paralegals, social workers, educators, and community volunteers, all working together to ensure comprehensive support for vulnerable individuals and families. Through this integrated approach, Ulemu is able to respond not only to emergency situations but also to the long-term emotional, legal, educational, and social consequences of violence.
