Stop Child Abuse

Stop Child Abuse is a child protection initiative focused on preventing and responding to physical
and sexual violence against children and adolescents in Kanyama compound.
ULEMU conducted awareness sessions in schools, door to door outreach and public sensitization
activities, helping children, parents, teachers, community leaders, and families recognize signs of
abuse and understand how to report cases and access support.
Seven community roadshows were organized in collaboration with Circus Zambia. The events
combined performances, educational activities, and public discussions on child protection and
violence against children. ULEMU staff also provided legal information and psychosocial guidance
through dedicated information stands, where community members could ask questions and
receive information about available services.
The project also emphasized the legal protection of children, including Section 22 of Zambia’s
Children’s Code Act, which prohibits corporal punishment and provides for criminal consequences
for those who subject children to corporal punishment. This information was shared with families
and community members to strengthen awareness that violence against children should not be
considered an acceptable form of discipline.
Another focus of the project was the importance of reporting sexual abuse within 72 hours.
Community activities highlighted how early reporting could allow children to access medical care,
psychosocial support, and legal protection without unnecessary delays.
The project also supported selected children who were exposed to particularly harmful or abusive
situations at home through boarding school sponsorship. This provided them with a safer
environment in which to continue their education while reducing their exposure to violence and
abuse.
Through these activities, Stop Child Abuse increased awareness of child abuse and strengthened
understanding within the community of the importance of recognizing, reporting, and responding
to violence against children.
